NAWIC Cleveland Member Spotlight: Antonette “Toni” Walker
Toni Walker’s legacy within NAWIC Cleveland is unmatched. A member since 1988, Toni joined the organization after working in the construction industry for nearly two decades without ever having heard of it. Once she did, she wasted no time becoming one of the chapter’s most recognized leaders, mentors, and membership champions.
Toni began her career with Vogt and Conant Construction Company in the early 1970s. She supported their Vice President/Treasurer, Controller, and Office Manager; typed financials, prepared prequalification reports to work in other states, and submitted fringe benefit reports to various unions. She also worked for Allied Supermarkets and CEA (Construction Employers Association), where she was finally introduced to NAWIC by a coworker who had quietly been a member for years.
A Builder of Programs and Community
Toni’s impact went far beyond recruitment. She transformed the chapter’s Block Kids event into a major outreach program, organizing events with over 200 participants, securing sponsorships, and involving dozens of construction professionals as judges and volunteers. She also expanded the chapter’s annual holiday party by partnering with other associations and businesses, reinforcing her commitment to community and collaboration.
Regionally and nationally, Toni became known for her “recipe for success” in membership and leadership development. She led sessions at regional forums, contributed to national conversations, and mentored other chapters in how to grow and engage members. Her approach emphasized personal outreach, handwritten letters, and making each member feel truly seen.
Toni’s commitment to building relationships extended well beyond her professional life. Born in Italy and immigrating to the U.S. as a young child, Toni has always valued family, heritage, and connection. She met her beloved husband Ron on the phone while working in the grocery industry, and their love story—filled with coffee, card games, his service in the Navy, and mutual respect—spanned 48 years of marriage. Together, they raised three children.
After retiring in 2010, Toni remained active in NAWIC and deeply involved in her family’s day-to-day life. She and her husband loved traveling together, enjoying trips to Alaska, Europe, and the Panama Canal. Following his passing in 2019 and the unexpected loss of their son, Toni’s resilience has shone through. She found immense joy in their three grandchildren, becoming a central figure in their lives.
Toni remained resilient during and after Covid. She wasn’t able to attend her granddaughters’ hockey games in person, so along came LiveBarn and she could watch them. Meetings and doctor appointments were on Zoom, and she would FaceTime family and friends to hear their voices.
Toni stayed connected to her NAWIC community, her high school friends, longtime Jaycee friends, choir members, great neighbors who she frequently has over for coffee and pastries, and her love of reading—with over 1,000 books read since 2011.
In recent years, she has chaired the chapter’s Happiness and Cheer Committee, personally reaching out to new members and sending cards for birthdays and milestones. Though her compromised immune system prevents her from attending many in-person events, Toni remains a beloved and respected presence.
