Inspiring Young Minds: Career Day at Assumption Academy

What do you want to be when you grow up? It’s a question we’ve all been asked, but we rarely follow a straight path to the answer. On Monday, January 27th, members of NAWIC Cleveland had the opportunity to share their unique career journeys with students at Assumption Academy in Broadview Heights, OH, during the school’s Annual Career Day.

Stepping into classrooms filled with eager young minds, our speakers shared stories of twists, turns, and unexpected opportunities in their professional lives. Jillian Van Wagnen reflected on the experience, saying, “It was great to be back in a classroom talking to kids about how everyone’s journey is different. As a kid, I wanted to be anything and everything — I never thought I would be in the position I am in today. I was scared that I had to have it figured out at a young age. By speaking and listening to the other speakers talk about their journey, it’s inspiring to know you don’t have to have it figured out right away. Everyone’s life and path is totally different. But what we all have in common is that our future is still unwritten.”

Jessica VanGelder added, “It was fun to share the many hats I wear today and have worn in my career. I still enjoy the ability to decide ‘what I want to be when I grow up.’ Bottom line, what you decide today doesn’t have to be forever. Do what inspires you and inspires others.”

Throughout the morning, each speaker visited two different classrooms, engaging students in discussions about career choices, education, and the unexpected turns that shape our professional lives. We answered questions like:

• What did you think you would be when you were younger?
• How did your career path change over time?
• What does your typical workday look like?
• What kind of education or training did you need for your job?
• Who would thrive in your field — problem solvers, creatives, team players?

Events like these are a great opportunity to introduce students to the many possibilities ahead of them and to show that career paths don’t always follow a straight line. We appreciate Assumption Academy for hosting this Career Day and for giving NAWIC Cleveland members the chance to share their experiences.
